Election Day is here! …

It’s Election Day here in Brooklyn Park! Absentee turnout was comparable to the General Election last fall so things are looking good on the turnout front. Now, for the rest of us, let’s get out there and vote today!!! Polls are open from 7am to 8pm. Win or lose – it’s going to be an interesting day for Brooklyn Park!

A heartfelt thanks to each and every volunteer who helped our campaign. I look forward to working for the great people of Brooklyn Park for years to come!

One last Candidate Forum / Heading into the ‘Home Stretch’ …

Greetings and hello again!  The Candidate Forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters & the North Hennepin Area Chamber was a great event.  Ten of the twelve candidates – all seated at the Council table up at City Hall – playing to a packed house as it were!   The questions submitted by the League & Chamber were well thought out and gave each of the candidates a chance to really express their individual vision for Brooklyn Park.  The Q+A’s submitted by the audience were, at once, both challenging and satisfying!  It sometimes isn’t as easy as it looks up there under the lights – but I think as the session progressed, all of the candidates became more comfortable.

As we head into the home stretch – just one more Candidate Forum to go (on Tuesday 4/26 @ City Hall … PDF version of the event flier available here: Flier: Meet The Candidates Forum 04-26-2011) – we’re going to be very busy!  If you have some time this weekend (Sat. 4/23) – feel free to contact me over the phone at 763.843.5319 – email at sds4bp@comcast.net – or, by submitting a contact form on this website!

RE: Youth Candidate Forum — A hearty “Thank You” …

Hats off to Mary Anderson and the Village Child organization for staging the Youth Candidate Forum yesterday! The event was well organized and well run — especially given the complexities of accommodating twelve candidates.  There were many thoughtful questions from some great young people and it was inspiring and encouraging seeing the next generation taking an active interest in government and the election process.

Equal time was given to each candidate to speak to his or her vision for the future of Brooklyn Park. Despite firmly categorizing myself as Mr. “Loves-to-talk,” believe it or not I was a bit nervous! (Though I did quickly relax and thoroughly enjoy the proceedings as the evening progressed.) In addition to participating, unexpected positive feedback from some of the participants was certainly a highlight of the evening as well as a humbling experience. I can’t think of much to compete with that feeling.

It’s exciting to imagine future forums with this group. I’d be thrilled and honored to participate again. Imagine the opportunities to coordinate with Social Studies teachers in our local schools to encourage students to see and experience the election process first hand!

To be sure, if I am successful in the Special Election, I eagerly look forward to continued involvement with the youth of Brooklyn Park — meeting with them proactively, answering their questions, addressing their concerns and hopefully engaging them on a deeper level to begin to lay the groundwork for the next generation of leadership for our city.

My continued thanks for your support.

Best —

Scott

A note from Scott …

Hello again!

First I would like to say that I have really enjoyed getting to speak with a number of you as our campaign for Mayor of Brooklyn Park moves forward.

I want to take some time now to discuss something from my past. In the interest of disclosure I want you to be aware of this issue.

About ten years ago I was working for a small business. After nearly eight months of working for this business, a disagreement arose over my compensation. I felt hurt, wronged and cheated. Rather than do the proper, responsible thing, I acted impulsively and committed a serious crime.  I confessed to this crime and immediately plead guilty. I paid a heavy but fair price for my actions. While it will always be a part of my past — it is not a part of who I am now; except to state that is a valuable and painful lesson that I learned.

Honor and trust are personal traits that are invaluable and yet they can be sold so cheaply. I know this first hand.

Like you, I do not take this matter lightly and now find myself in the unenviable position of not only asking for your vote but also asking for your understanding and forgiveness in this matter.

Best –

Brooklyn Park Mayoral Race: Meet the Candidate Youth Forum

Village Child is hosting a candidate forum on Tuesday, April 12, 2011 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm at the Brooklyn Park Evangelical Free Church: 7849 West Broadway, Brooklyn Park, MN 55445 – The Forum is intended to give a rare opportunity to the children of Brooklyn Park to interface with their would-be city mayor. It is also intended to inspire the children to some day run for public office and become good role models. The Forum will be hosted and facilitated by our children. They will derive the questions, collect questions from the audience and ask the questions. This should really be a great event! Looking forward to it! — SDS

A great example of GOOD government working on behalf of its citizens

This is a great story about a VERY positive program in Brooklyn Park! – 100 blighted houses salvaged in Brooklyn Park. It’s not just about saving a house here and there… It’s about preserving and strengthening neighborhoods! If my neighbor’s house goes to the dogs, what happens to MY property value???

Instead of further bickering about bailouts and the goings on in Washington, D.C. and Saint Paul, this is a great example of GOOD government working on behalf of its citizens.

Blighted neighborhoods should be ruled unacceptable by the people of Brooklyn Park.
