Hats off to Mary Anderson and the Village Child organization for staging the Youth Candidate Forum yesterday! The event was well organized and well run — especially given the complexities of accommodating twelve candidates. There were many thoughtful questions from some great young people and it was inspiring and encouraging seeing the next generation taking an active interest in government and the election process.
Equal time was given to each candidate to speak to his or her vision for the future of Brooklyn Park. Despite firmly categorizing myself as Mr. “Loves-to-talk,” believe it or not I was a bit nervous! (Though I did quickly relax and thoroughly enjoy the proceedings as the evening progressed.) In addition to participating, unexpected positive feedback from some of the participants was certainly a highlight of the evening as well as a humbling experience. I can’t think of much to compete with that feeling.
It’s exciting to imagine future forums with this group. I’d be thrilled and honored to participate again. Imagine the opportunities to coordinate with Social Studies teachers in our local schools to encourage students to see and experience the election process first hand!
To be sure, if I am successful in the Special Election, I eagerly look forward to continued involvement with the youth of Brooklyn Park — meeting with them proactively, answering their questions, addressing their concerns and hopefully engaging them on a deeper level to begin to lay the groundwork for the next generation of leadership for our city.
My continued thanks for your support.
Best —
